'SWAT to replace SARS', IGP Declares (Details)


The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, has announced that a new unit known as SWAT has been set up in place of the disbanded F-SARS following the protests. The Special Anti Robbery Squad was accused of brutality by the citizens of Nigeria. SWAT which is Special Weapons and Tactics team has been declared to take up the function of the disbanded F-SARS. 

However, some youths have shown disinterest in the new unit due to their past experiences with SARS and F-SARS. The recommendations for the new unit include: psychological and medical examination to ascertain fitness and eligibility for the new unit. Members would be trained at various police training institutions in the country. 

The IGP also stated that the members of the disbanded F-SARS will report to the Force Headquarters for medical and psychological examination including questioning. Then they will be retrained, re-orientated then transferred to other units and for any serious task. Part of the unit under the force will include medical personnels, psychologists, psychiatrists, pastors and imams. The unrelenting protests of the youths of the country finally paid off.
