Perfect your Spoken English with these 9 Tips

Learning a different language other than your mother tongue or first language is usually quite tasking, especially when those languages are worlds apart (basically from different language families). It usually requires time, persistence, consistency and exposure to the right information. The differences in both languages usually constitute areas of difficulties for the learner. Learning a language isn't a day's job, we should be open to learn daily, anywhere and anytime. Patience is required for this venture.  These hurdles can be scaled through with some tips which have been elucidated below.

1. Speak English more: "Practice makes perfect", is a popular saying that has proven to be true with time. The more you do something, the better you become at it, the more you'd learn how not to do it and how to do it better in the process.

2. Read: You have to love reading because the more you read the better you become accustomed to new words. It's a very good idea to check out the meaning of the word, and it's pronunciation including any other linguistic input you can get in the dictionary when you're done reading.

3. Attitude: Be optimistic about it. Our minds are powerful, they help us attain what we can see in our mind's eye. Develop a positive attitude towards perfecting you spoken English.

4. Variety: A lot of people do not know the difference between the varieties of English. To improve, you should choose one standard variety and stick to it. Avoid speaking different varieties in one single discourse. If you wish to be proficient in more than one variety, perfect your speaking skills in one before moving to another variety.

5. Right exposure: You can perfect your spoken English by listening to CNN news, BBC news, VOA etc; it'll definitely help you hear and practice the correct pronunciation and make adequate corrections. There are other TV and radio programmes you can listen to. Watch out for Diction programmes too.

6. Correspondence: There is no one-on-one correspondence between sounds and letters in English language. It is pertinent for you to know that words in English language aren't always pronounced as they are spelt. There's difference between spoken and written English. Be more concerned and intentional about the spoken aspect than the written. Consider the following words for clarity: cough pronounced as kof, bought pronounced bot, queue pronounced as simply q, physical pronounced fisikal etc.

7. Environment/Company: These are great factors that will positively or negatively contribute to your perfection. Keep the right company, those who will communicate to you in the language, who are better than you; people who challenge and correct you will go a long way. Going to corporate environments will help you learn the language better and gear you towards improving your spoken English.

8. Consult: You should be ready to consult a language helper when necessary. You can also refer to a pronouncing dictionary, it'll be of great help to you. Accept corrections in good faith and learn from the right sources at all times.

9. Focus: Remain focused, be very determined in improving and consistently learn and practice.
